Suffering with Back Acne

Hey girls!
Hope your all having a lovely week, its almost the weekend again! I'm working this weekend so nothing too exciting to look forward to!

Today's post is all about my experience with "Back Acne". There are probably people out there who are or who have suffered with worse than me, please let me know if you have, I would love to hear other peoples stories and what they have done to help it!

I have suffered with spots for as long as I can remember, not just on my face like most people but on my shoulders, my chest and the whole way down my back. It had cleared up but unfortunately it's back with a vengeance.

I'm lucky I have more or less conquered it on my face, I still get the odd breakout and my skin is nowhere near perfect but I've come to live with that, its not the end of the world! When I was younger I had REALLY bad skin, my mother tried everything possible, every brand-Vichy, La Roche Posay, Declare and Tea Tree and antibiotic creams from the doctor. There was a lot more, but I cant remember the brands. I was looking after my skin on my face but I was ignoring the back acne, nobody saw it right?
Well, eventually it caught up with me and as I got on in my teenage years, it began to bother me. I couldn't wear tank tops or spaghetti strap tops as the spots would be down my shoulders. As a teenager, every little thing would bother us right?

So my mother could see how it was upsetting me and she spoke to numerous beauticians and they all recommended one thing - Sunbeds!

Now before you jump down my throat, this was something my mother and myself did not decide lightly. I did about 3 minutes 2-3 times a week. Low and behold after a few weeks, my skin had cleared up. So we decided I would stop using them. My skin stayed clear for a few weeks but it then returned!

At this stage the whole thing about Sunbeds being so bad for you started to come out so my mam wasn't allowing me back on them. The next step was another trip to the doctor and this time she decided to put me on a pill that was aimed and clearing up skin. I was not going on this for contraceptive reasons, I was, I think only 15 at the time.

So for the last 8-9 years my skin has been good, not great but good. At the end of last year, my doctor decided to change my pill as the one I had been on, was known for being a risk of developing Breast Cancer, as was being banned in some countries. I noted my concerns to the doctor about my skin and about how well that one worked for me and she gave me an alternative. It worked, skin wise but it was throwing my mood, my weight etc etc, so I didn't want to stay on that one.

We tried another one, and so far this one is suiting me - bar my skin. I haven't had any breakouts on my face, not bad ones anyway and im delighted with that, but my back and shoulders is a whole different story.

I shouldn't let it bother me, but I do, especially at this time of year. Some weeks my skin is good, others it is very bad.

So what I'm doing to help combat it:

  • Drinking more water
  • Washing my hair separately
  • exfoliating my back with a brush
  • Healthy Eating
  • Not wearing the same sports bra, especially after training,2 days in a row (common knowledge anyway)
  • Showering after exercise and everyday (again common knowledge)
For a while I thought it might have been because my hair had gotten longer and the conditioner was blocking my pores, so I'm trying the whole washing my hair separate thing and see how that goes.
I'm exfoliating everyday, or maybe every 2nd day, depending on how bad my skin is. Our skin in our body is tougher than on our face. I wouldn't recommend SCRUBBING your skin but using the mitts to give yourself a good scrub but not too hard!

I'm trying all those things at the moment and I'm going to see how that goes.
I'm also considering going for a facial for your back, exactly the same as face facial but on your back.
I'm not going to resort back to the sunbeds, I know now how bad they are for you, no matter how bad my skin is. And in a few months time if there is still no improvement, I am going to head back to my doctor.

Here are a few photos, (bad photos) of how my skin was last week. It has been worse, and it goes the whole way down my back not just where the photos are.

If you suffer from back acne, please get in contact, would love to hear if you have any tips or how you are managing it!
