Prepping for Tan

I am not a huge tan person, I only apply it if I have a special occasion coming up or if I'm going on a night out, as do majority of people. I uses always use Sally Henson but when Cocoa Brown came out, I converted and haven't changed. I love with Cocoa Brown that if you only want a light tan, you shower after one hour but if you want it darker you leave it on up to 3 hours. I always just apply mine and leave it on overnight.

I have a confirmation on Tuesday, and although I am not wearing a dress or skirt I am still going to do an all over tan, cause it makes me feel good.

I will do before, during and after pictures and a full blog post when I have applied the tan.
But to get the most flawless tan, you need to prep your skin.

I do this every night in the shower anyway but focus more on exfoliation a few days before applying tan. I use a mixture of Cocoa Brown Tough Stuff and Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub.
I find with the Soap & Glory, the grains are bigger so if I want a deeper exfoliation I use this.
I know you can use Tough Stuff on dry skin too to get an even deeper exfoliation so I may try that when I am removing the tan.
The reason for exfoliating is it unplugs pores, removes dead skin cells and prevents an uneven skintone and will leave you with silky soft skin.

Cleanse the Skin

Ok, so you have exfoliated in the shower that morning, and decide to apply your tan that evening. Stop. Hop into the shower quickly and give your skin a gentle cleanse. The reason for this is so you can remove any dirt or dust or grime that your skin has collected during the day.

Make sure your skin is well moisturised and hydrated before you apply tan. I use Cocoa Brown Chocolate Whip which you can find a review on here. This will ensure your tan is even and will help it stay longer. But ensure that it is an oil free moisturiser as an oil one will cause a barrier to your tan and wont take to your skin.

Ensure your tan mitt is clean and dry. Give it a shake to get rid of any dust it has collected. I use the Cocoa Brown Mitt which you can find in Penneys/Primark, chemists and now Tesco. Put a small amount of tan on the mitt and with long even strokes in the direction of your heart. Don't miss any little part of your skin.

Orla's Tanning Tips
  • Apply a clear nail varnish to your nails to prevent them from getting stained. The one I use is Morgan Taylor.
  • Apply Vaseline to your brows to prevent stains
  • Apply a hair band toy your hair especially if you have fair hair to prevent tanning of the hair.
  • Don't wear fitted clothes immediately applying to make sure there are no marks on the skin and tan.
  • Moisturise daily to help it stay even longer.
  • When you have your body finished, with the mitt and no extra product, give your face a quick wipe with it. This is what I do myself. Some people don't like tan on their face.
  • Wax or shave 24 hours before applying tan as these processes open the pores and tan will sink into your pores and make skin look spotty.
Happy Tanning :)
